Travel restrictions won’t last forever. Where are you dreaming of going?
Having to stay home during the pandemic hasn’t been easy for anyone. Even if you’ve enjoyed the slowed pace or are finding unexpected joy in new hobbies and interests — this time can still be a time of restlessness, uncertainty, and anxiety. You probably know someone (maybe yourself!) who had to cancel a destination wedding, a summer vacation, or a trip they’d been anticipating for months or even years.
If you’re someone who loves to travel, all these restrictions can feel especially discouraging.
Travel isn’t just about going places.
It’s about the entire experience, the anticipation, the joy, about who you are and who you become when you visit someplace new.
There can be a real sorrow in the letting go, especially amidst so many other changes and unknowns. One thing I’ve heard a lot of people saying is, I wish I hadn’t put off taking that trip I always wanted to take.
But believe it or not, now is a great time to be planning your post-COVID-celebration trip.
There are a few reasons that this downtime is the ideal time to give me a call and get started planning the vacation of your dreams.
1.
The travel restrictions won’t last forever. I know how it feels when your biggest
excursions were to the grocery store! But this is an event with an end. The vaccine is rolling out and people have been heeding the calls to mask up. Beginning to
dream and plan now can be a wonderful way to nurture hope and excitement, and
to keep your mind focused on all the good things that will be possible
again.
2. There are many deals to be had. All around the world, resorts and venues and restaurants and parks are just as eager to have you return as you are to get out into the world again. Destinations and airlines and resorts have instituted extreme cleaning protocols. They want you to visit, and they are ready to offer incredible deals. As your Travel Advisor, I will have access to discounts, promotions, and VIP perks that these businesses are waiting to offer.
3.
It’s easy to build in travel protections when you book. You don’t have to worry about losing money if something comes up. Many airlines
and resorts are offering no-fee cancellations or adjustments. They know these
are unusual times, and they want to be as flexible as possible. Remember: they want your business!
4. Post COVID Travel planning will be intense. Which destinations have testing? Will it be free or cost extra? Which will require the COVID vaccine before entry? What documents will you need? How much time will you need to dedicate to traveling safely (pre-departure testing, post-departure testing, fever checks, transportation, etc.). Get ahead of it all by planning as early as possible. Then allow me to sift through all the paperwork and help you tick off the checklists.
One of the many amazing gifts of traveling is that it teaches us resilience, curiosity, and how to find joy in the little things.
Wherever you are right now, I encourage you to embrace this moment and let's start planning your next adventure. As we emerge again, imagine the new appreciation we’ll have for things like bustling cafes, sunlit beaches, and just being able to interact face to face again. There are so many beautiful things ahead. If you’re ready to get started, I'm just a click away. I can’t wait to hear from you!
Five things you need to know about travel insurance
Even the most seasoned travelers sometimes feel confused about travel insurance — what’s out there, what it covers, whether or not they need it. I’m not a travel insurance salesperson. That's not what I do; however, I do include options for my clients when they book their trips with me.
While coverage and policies vary from state to state, of course, here are some basics of travel insurance to get you started:
There are five main types of travel insurance. What you might need depends largely on what kind of trip you’re taking, what kind of traveler you are, and how frequently you travel. The five main types are:- trip cancellation and interruption (full or partial reimbursement for a trip you need to cancel prior to departure, a trip that gets cancelled because a tour company or resort goes out of business, or a trip that gets cut short for a wide variety of reasons)
- medical (for health issues that occur outside of your normal coverage area)
- evacuation (due to disaster, dangerous weather, political emergency, or medical emergency)
- baggage (reimbursement for lost, stolen, or damaged baggage)
- flight insurance (also called “crash coverage,” this is basically a life insurance policy that covers you while you’re on the plane, in the event of a statistically-rare crash)
“The various types are generally sold in some combination — rather than buying only baggage, medical, or cancellation insurance, you’ll usually purchase a package that includes most or all of them. If you want just one type of coverage in particular — such as medical — ask for that (though it might come with a little cancellation or baggage insurance, too). ‘Comprehensive insurance’ covers all of the above, plus expenses incurred if your trip is delayed, if you miss your flight, or if your tour company changes your itinerary.”
Avoid purchasing travel insurance from the company that’s also hosting your trip. The reason for this? If that company goes out of business, chances are, so does their insurance. That's not to say that the Travel Protection offered by the major cruise lines or resorts is bad.
Some companies offer comprehensive coverage that can serve as your primary coverage while you’re traveling. What does this mean, and how can it benefit you? It means that the insurance company will pay first, regardless of what other insurance you have. They don’t even inquire about additional insurance, saving you tons of paperwork and out-of-pocket expenses. TravelGuard and Travelex are two such companies that provide these policies as an option, both of which I can offer to my clients.
Weigh the cost of the trip with the cost of insurance. If you just bought a $79 ticket for a quick weekend in Chicago — is it worth it? Maybe, maybe not. If, however, you’re headed out on a once-in-a-lifetime trip that you’ve been saving for for months, travel insurance is likely a great idea.
PRO TIP: Travel Insurance is a MUST for international and cruise travel. Is it required? No. But too often travelers get left with HEFTY bills because of unforeseen interruptions.
If you’re looking to maximize your fun and minimize your risk, travel insurance might be just the right option for you. Take your time, ask tons of questions, and find what works best for you and your family.
